We all know that a lack of brushing and flossing on a daily basis can lead to cavities. In some cases, the lack of care can eventually cause the need for a person to have dentures. There are also a few other conditions that are not as widely discussed. One of these is periodontal disease.

Periodontal disease is a type of bacterial infection found in the gums. Once the infection starts to attack the gums they will start to become red and inflamed. It is important to seek treatment once these signs manifest, otherwise the bacterial infection will spread down into your bones cause a loss of bone density. This will loosen your teeth and cause them to fall out.

A scaling and root planing treatment is necessary to keep the bone loss from happening. During this treatment, the bacterial infection is scraped away by removing biofilm and plaque from the bottoms surface area and roots of the affected teeth. Regular brushing and flossing will prevent tartar from forming and is the best measure against preventing periodontal disease from happening.

After the bacteria is removed, the patient should make brushing a flossing a regular habit. Periodontal disease can’t be completely eradicated. Preventative measures are necessary to ensure another outbreak doesn’t happen.
