Halloween treats and dental care don’t necessarily go together, but they can indeed work side by side. With Halloween behind us, it’s important to protect your child’s smile from the tooth decay that their holiday treats can create. To help you and your child prevent dental cavities and maintain strong and healthy smiles, we encourage you to use one or more of the following candy plans:

Divvy up the candy
Hide your child’s candy and only give them small amounts throughout time. This will keep your child from overloading on the treats and it will make the Halloween candy last longer.

Make a game out of it
You can use the child’s candy as a reward for winning a family game. This will give your child the chance to win the candy back all while having a little fun! You can also use the candy as a reward for completing chores around the house. The more chores that are finished, the more candy they can have!

Let your child play tricks on you
Now is the time to take advantage of the “trick” part of trick-or-treating. Let your child get creative and play tricks on you. If they trick you, they can have a piece of candy. This could be a fun family activity!

Barter the candy
Sometimes your child has a specific toy or activity they are interested in. Instead of your child eating their Halloween treats, you can have them trade their candy for the toy or activity they are interested in!

Trade the candy for money
Many kids like to see less candy and more money in their piggy bank, so why not have them trade their candy for money? This could keep your child’s smile safe and healthy and it can teach your child how to earn money.

These candy plans will help you regulate the Halloween candy around the house, which can also help prevent tooth decay and additional dental problems. They will also let you have a little fun with all of your Halloween treats!
